from hobby to hyper-fixation
poles and petioles started with a woman and a struggling monstera that was hanging on by a thread. with lots of research, light, water and some perseverance, that plant eventually thrived.
what started as one plant was propagated into a bunch of little plants and next thing you know it's the neurodivergent urge to collect and grow and propagate all the monsteras... then philodendrons... then pothos... and some of their friends... iykyk sometimes that's just the way things go.
eventually, what was one single monstera became a carefully curated collection of aroid tropical house plants. we don't grow anything else (except calatheas, but they basically grow the same). almost all of our plants are grown from propagations of our mother plants or from tissue cultures, and they are specifically selected for stellar genetics, unique variegation, or leaf shape mutations. we're always on the hunt for unique plants.
don't stress - collect all the plants
collecting plants can be intimidating - there's a sea of information and so many plants that it can be hard to know where to start. that's why poles and petioles is here to help.
we love finding the healthiest plants with the best genes and curating them into collections. from basic collections like "must-have plants for every collector" to hyper-specific collections for beloved plant traits, we're always thinking about how our plants connect to each other.
whether you are a new plant parent looking to start your own collection or a seasoned collector searching for your next unicorn, our plants will have something to offer.
it's me
my name's michelle and i love house plants. poles and petioles was borne from a love of houseplants that stems back to childhood. i have vivid memories of my mom's snake plants and spider plants and avocado pits sprouting in water. when i moved out on my own, my passion for growing plants grew and i developed a special interest in aroid plants - especially monstera, philodendron, and pothos species. house plants are such a great way to keep grounded in a chaotic world and, naturally, the more of them you have, the better. these plants are my passion and i am so excited to share them with you!
